Dr. Ralph DeFronzo, M.D., holds Board Certifications in Internal Medicine and Nephrology. He has been on the faculty of UT Health San Antonio since 1988 and holds the Joe R. & Teresa Lozano Long Distinguished Chair in Diabetes. He is most known for leading the U.S. development of metformin, the primary initial treatment for diabetes. More recently, he discovered a glucose reabsorption approach for diabetes treatment, which has led to the development and approval of multiple drugs for diabetes treatment. He is currently working on a possible cure for Type 1 diabetes, with research currently in animal studies.
With a medical degree from Harvard Medical School and residency at John Hopkins as his foundation, he has received multiple awards and accolades throughout his career as he continues to work on treatments and cures for diabetes and its complications. He has been a helpful contributor to BioMedSA’ s knowledge of the industry over the years, most recently participating in BioMedSA’s diabetes collaboration meeting.
