Who’s Who in Central/South Texas – Luis Martinez-Sobrido, Ph.D.

Luis Martinez-Sobrido, Ph.D. is a globally recognized virologist whose groundbreaking research has significantly advanced our understanding of viral pathogenesis and vaccine development. He is especially known for his work on RNA viruses, including influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and arenaviruses. His innovative use of reverse genetics systems has enabled the creation of recombinant viruses for studying viral replication and host interactions—tools that are now widely used in the field. His contributions have helped accelerate the development of antiviral strategies and vaccines for emerging infectious diseases.

Currently serving as a Professor in the Department of Virology and Immunology at Texas Biomedical Research Institute, Dr. Martinez-Sobrido leads a dynamic research team focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms of viral infections and host immune responses. His lab is actively involved in developing novel vaccines and antiviral therapies, particularly for high-consequence pathogens that pose global health threats. His work supports Texas Biomed’s mission to reduce the burden of infectious diseases through cutting-edge science and collaboration.

Dr. Martinez-Sobrido earned his Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the University of Salamanca in Spain, where he laid the foundation for his career in virology. He later completed postdoctoral training at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, a leading institution in infectious disease research. His academic journey reflects a deep commitment to scientific excellence and global health.
