Who’s Who in Central/South Texas – Erika L. Thompson, PhD, MPH, CPH, FAAHB

 

Erika L. Thompson, PhD, MPH, CPH, FAAHB is a nationally recognized public health researcher whose work has significantly advanced the understanding and prevention of human papillomavirus (HPV)-related cancers. Her research employs mixed-methods approaches to explore HPV vaccine decision-making, school-entry policies, and innovative healthcare delivery models. Beyond HPV, Thompson has addressed critical reproductive health issues, including contraceptive access for women experiencing homelessness, and has investigated social determinants of maternal and child health such as housing insecurity, early childhood education, and violence. Her dedication to community-engaged research is reflected in her numerous publications and her leadership in collaborative initiatives like the Texas HPV Coalition and the Cancer Alliance of Texas.

Thompson currently serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Quantitative and Qualitative Health Sciences at the UT School of Public Health San Antonio, part of UT San Antonio. She is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Health Behavior, where she serves on the Board of Directors as Secretary. Her active involvement in professional organizations and advisory boards, including the Texas Cancer Registry, underscores her commitment to translating research into impactful public health practice.

Thompson earned her Master of Public Health (MPH) in Epidemiology from the University of Florida and her PhD in Public Health from the University of South Florida, where she also completed a postdoctoral fellowship focused on women’s reproductive health. She holds certification in public health (CPH) and has received multiple accolades for her academic and research excellence, including faculty achievement and research awards from the University of North Texas Health Science Center.
