BioMedSA Names Dr. James R. “Jim” Leininger as the 2026 Entrepreneur Award Recipient

Championing the biomedical industry and its contributions to the lives of the citizens of San Antonio, BioMedSA has selected its 2026 Entrepreneur Award recipient. BioMedSA named Dr. James R. “Jim” Leininger as this year’s honoree, recognizing a physician‑innovator whose work transformed wound care, strengthened the region’s biomedical economy, and helped define San Antonio’s identity as a national center for medical technology.

Dr. Leininger began his career as an emergency room physician, where he identified critical gaps in patient care—particularly the need for advanced therapeutic equipment to prevent complications caused by immobility. In 1976, he founded Kinetic Concepts, Inc. (KCI) from a one‑bedroom apartment and began developing medical beds engineered to improve patient outcomes. These early innovations fundamentally changed how hospitals approached long‑term patient support and positioned KCI for the rapid growth that followed.

KCI became best known for its breakthrough Vacuum-Assisted Closure (V.A.C.) therapy, a negative‑pressure wound therapy system that revolutionized the treatment of complex wounds and became a global standard of care. KCI’s success ultimately led to its multibillion‑dollar sale to Acelity and later to 3M, and its wound‑care technologies continue today within Solventum, a global medical device leader.

Reflecting on his career, Dr. Leininger noted, “Everything started with caring for patients. If you focus on solving real problems for real people, the rest follows.” He added, “I am grateful for the support San Antonio offered and for the opportunities God blessed us with, guiding us to grow ideas into solutions to help people heal. That has always been the greatest reward.”

Under Dr. Leininger’s leadership, KCI invested heavily in research and development, enabling the company to design clinically effective, scalable solutions that improved the practice of medicine. The company’s growth helped establish San Antonio as a national center for wound‑care innovation.

Over the past five decades, the company’s evolution from KCI to Solventum has generated an estimated $1.2–$1.6 billion in annual economic impact in San Antonio and supported more than 10,000 local jobs, strengthening the region’s skilled workforce and supplier ecosystem.  “KCI didn’t just create groundbreaking technologies,” said BioMedSA President Heather Hanson, “it trained up an entire medical device workforce in San Antonio. The talent developed through KCI continues to fuel innovation across our region today.”

Dr. Leininger’s entrepreneurial impact extends far beyond KCI. Through MedCare Investment Funds, founded in 1991, he oversaw more than $1 billion in assets and invested in medical innovation, biotechnology, and emerging technologies. He also cofounded ATX Technologies in 1994 and the Renal Care Group in 1995, each contributing to advancements in their respective fields. His influence on Texas business leadership was recognized with his 2007 induction into the Texas Business Hall of Fame.

Bexar County Commissioner Grant Moody highlighted the broader economic significance: “Dr. Leininger’s work helped anchor a sector that now drives billions in economic activity across our region. Beyond building a world-class company, he devoted decades to investing in San Antonio and serving communities across Texas through philanthropy and civic leadership. His legacy demonstrates how innovation and community stewardship can strengthen a region for generations. I’m personally grateful for his friendship, his vision, and his enduring commitment to improving the lives of others.”

San Antonio City Councilwoman Ivalis Meza Gonzales underscored the community impact: “Solventum employs people from every corner of San Antonio in high‑paying, meaningful jobs. That workforce footprint is part of Dr. Leininger’s legacy and part of what keeps opportunity growing in our city.”

BioMedSA created the Entrepreneur Award to honor individuals whose innovations advance patient care while strengthening the region’s scientific and economic landscape. Dr. Leininger exemplifies the purpose of this award: a physician innovator who solved urgent clinical problems, an entrepreneur who built a global company from San Antonio, and a leader whose work helped shape the city’s biomedical identity. His motivation to honor God’s purposes in helping people—continues to inspire the collaborative culture that defines San Antonio’s life‑science community.

Dr. Leininger is known for connecting with people on both personal and professional levels. His story—from a challenging beginning to building one of the world’s most influential wound‑care companies—reflects perseverance, faith, and a lifelong commitment to improving the practice of medicine. Martin Landon, CEO of BioBridge Global, reflected on Dr. Leininger’s influence: “Dr. Jim has been a great mentor, physician and friend. He taught me that by simply always trying to help people in need, a person could have a successful and rewarding career.”

In addition to the Entrepreneur Award, BioMedSA will honor two additional innovation awardees—one in research and one in clinical care—at the 2026 Awards for Innovation in Healthcare and Bioscience event on September 23, 2026. All three awards are part of BioMedSA’s Awards for Innovation in Healthcare and Bioscience program, which honors innovation in patient care, education, research and development, leadership, public policy, and medical technology.
