Who’s Who in SA: COL Jane Shen-Gunther, M.D., Ph.D.

COL Jane Shen-Gunther, M.D., is an obstetrician-gynocolgist clinician-researcher at the Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC). Her focus is to develop simple and self-administered cancer screening tests. Much of her research has focused on the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), including the development of a highly sophisticated predictive model. In addition to improving patient care, her work has resulted in better prediction of PAP outcomes in underdeveloped countries.

Shen-Gunter is the Chief of the Department of Clinical Investigation (DCI) Research Service at BAMC, promoting, coordinating, supporting and overseeing clinical and pre-clinical research. The DCI Research Service also supports graduate medial education. In addition to BAMC, which is the largest and busiest research program within the Defense Health Agency, Shen-Gunther has served as a consultant to 7 other medical facilities with in Regional Health Command-Central advising and facilitating research, regulatory and fiscal affairs.

Shen-Gunther has won three academic teaching awards, the 2019 Wolfram Innovator Award and authored/co-authored over 20 publications. Military service commendations include the Army Commendation Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal and NATO Medal. She earned her M.D. at Thomas Jefferson University and completed residency at the Tripler Army Medical Center and a Fellowship at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. She also holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in Translational Science from UT Health San Antonio.
