Dr. Ken Hargreaves has made significant contributions to the field of endodontics and pain research, publishing over 200 articles and co-editing notable textbooks such as Seltzer and Bender’s Dental Pulp and the 11th edition of Cohen’s Pathways of the Pulp. His research focuses on the pharmacology of pain and inflammation, earning him prestigious awards including the NIH MERIT Award, two International Association for Dental Research Distinguished Scientist Awards, and the ADA Gold Medal Award for Research. His research continues to impact the field, with ongoing projects funded by significant NIH grants.
Currently, Dr. Hargreaves serves as a professor and chair of the Department of Endodontics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, with joint appointments in the Departments of Pharmacology, Physiology, and Surgery. He also maintains a private practice limited to endodontics. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics.
Dr. Hargreaves received his B.A. in Neurobiology from the University of California at Berkeley in 1977, his D.D.S. from Georgetown University School of Dentistry in 1983, and his Ph.D. in Physiology from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD, in 1986. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship in clinical and basic pain research at the National Institutes of Health and his residency in Endodontics from the University of Minnesota in 1993. He has also served as a senior staff fellow at the Pain Clinic of the Neurobiology and Anesthesiology Branch of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research/National Institutes of Health and as an associate professor of endodontics and pharmacology at the University of Minnesota.
