Strategic Accomplishments

BioMed SA is pursuing four core strategies to achieve its mission: to organize and promote San Antonio's healthcare and bioscience assets to accelerate growth of the sector and to enhance San Antonio's reputation as a city of science and health. While specific objectives and activities evolve from one year to the next, the organization's underlying strategies remain constant.

Strategy #1: Sustain and Grow the Local Industry



Objective: Build the BioMed SA/industry brand and increase our visibility

  • Presented 4th Annual Julio Palmaz Award for Innovation in Healthcare and the Biosciences to internationally known inventor and entrepreneur Dean Kamen
  • Represented San Antonio at the BIO International Convention,  Med Tech New Ventures Conference, and Texas State Life Science Conference
  • Represented San Antonio biomedical industry on SA to DC trip and statewide legislative fly-in
  • Advocated for approval of the Pathway for Biosimilars Act and other legislation supported by San Antonio’s life science community
  • Recommended successful candidates for committee appointments to the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas and helped organize introductory San Antonio visit by the CPRIT executive leadership team
  • Helped organize and lead two educational symposia for San Antonio’s life science industry: “Growth Strategies for Life Science Companies” and “Military Medicine & Research in San Antonio: Innovations and Opportunities”
  • Offered a national cost-savings program to BioMed SA members under an agreement with the Texas Healthcare and Bioscience Institute and BIO Business Solutions.
  • Wrote bioscience overview for inaugural edition of San Antonio HCB Magazine and contributed several op-ed columns published in the San Antonio Express-News
  • Quoted in press articles and broadcast interviews about San Antonio’s biomedical industry
  • Advertised in Innovation Texas magazine, Business Images of the Alamo Area, and the San Antonio HCB Magazine
  • Launched redesigned website with significantly enhanced graphics and functionality
  • Produced “San Antonio. City of Science and Health” branded collateral material, and worked with students from University of the Incarnate Word’s Center for Medical Tourism Research to prepare additional material for industry promotional use



Strategy #2: Attract New Biomedical Industry


Objectives: Position BioMed SA as a “sector expert” with economic developers; develop recruitment strategies and tools

  • Played pivotal role in recruitment of Medtronic’s Diabetes Therapy & Education Center
  • Hosted meetings for representatives of the Canadian Consulate in Dallas and for visiting entrepreneurs from California, Washington D.C., Dallas, and South Texas
  • Supplied San Antonio representative Mrs. Naoko Shirane with handouts in Japanese on San Antonio’s biomedical industry for use at a business development forum at BioJapan 2009
  • Supported international relationship building efforts in Mexico and Madrid, led by the City of San Antonio and Free Trade Alliance


Strategy #3: Attract, Grow & Retain Workforce Talent


Objective: Encourage efforts to expand biomedical education 

  • Supported statewide coalition in advocating for expanded nursing education funding
  • Supported launch of the new Health Professions Academy by the Alamo Area Academies and Alamo Colleges
  • Contributed to the BCMS Foundation scholarship program for students pursuing careers in medicine, nursing, and related healthcare fields
  • Sponsored a student robotics team in San Antonio’s inaugural FIRST Lego League tournament
  • Supported creation of San Antonio’s first Health Explorers post at Lanier High School, sponsored by American Sunrise




Strategy #4: Generate Necessary Funding and Resources



Objective: Host investor/donor/legislator events to develop industry awareness/support

  • Supported fundraising efforts of San Antonio’s new Targeted Technology Fund
  • Assisted City of San Antonio consultants in efforts to organize a local Multi-Technology Fund


Objective: Build community membership and cultivate ongoing public support for BioMed SA

  • Secured renewed 2010 funding commitments from City, County, and Methodist Healthcare Ministries totaling $260,000
  • Expanded our focus on building membership within the community at large in addition to the biomedical industry
