Strategic Accomplishments

BioMed SA is pursuing four core strategies to achieve its mission: to organize and promote San Antonio's healthcare and bioscience assets to accelerate growth of the sector and to enhance San Antonio's reputation as a city of science and health. While specific objectives and activities evolve from one year to the next, the organization's underlying strategies remain constant.

Strategy #1: Sustain and Grow the Local Industry


Objective: Build the BioMed SA/industry brand and increase our visibility:

  • Presented 3rd Annual Julio Palmaz Award for Innovation in Healthcare and the Biosciences to three San Antonio pediatric orthopaedic surgeons
  • Secured coverage of San Antonio’s biomedical industry in Business Facilities national magazine cover story on new biotechnology clusters and in Business Images of the Alamo Area magazine
  • Led Express-News editorial board meeting with pillar representatives in the wake of AT&T headquarters departure to stress the importance of our homegrown biomedical industry
  • Exhibited and/or presented at a national business incubation conference, a statewide business conference, and two Greater Chamber conferences
  • Briefed Congressional staff on annual SA to DC trip on San Antonio’s pursuit of the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility, the National Trauma Institute, and growth of military medicine
  • Advocated locally for increased health IT adoption, funding and collaboration
  • Participated in small group breakfast meetings with science writers from the New York Times and National Public Radio
  • Participated in statewide bioscience initiatives through the Texas Healthcare and Bioscience Institute
  • Quoted in local press articles about San Antonio’s biomedical industry


Strategy #2: Attract New Biomedical Industry


Objectives: Position BioMed SA as a “sector expert” with economic developers; develop recruitment strategies and tools

  • Played ongoing role in supporting San Antonio’s pursuit of the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility
  • Represented San Antonio’s biomedical industry on trade missions to Japan and Mexico
  • Hosted day of meetings in San Antonio for a Canadian science official
  • Advertised in international life science clusters directory
  • Arranged for local industry representatives to speak at conferences in Mexico and Florida
  • Represented the local biomedical industry at Governor’s Competitiveness Council meeting
  • Met with several biotechnology companies considering San Antonio as a location


Strategy #3: Attract, Grow & Retain Workforce Talent


Objective: Continue to guide industry cluster initiative for workforce development

  • Led development of nursing shortage report and sought endorsements from other industry organizations
  • Supported Hospital Council’s grant application to create Workforce Management Center
  • Attended National Healthcare Workforce Development Summit in Arlington, VA and U.S. Chamber’s
  • Workforce and Education Summit in San Antonio
  • Moderated industry cluster panel at Texas Workforce Commission conference workshop
  • Arranged for a San Antonio biomedical HR executive to participate in Texas Higher Education
  • Coordinating Board task force on technology industry workforce needs
  • Participated on Greater Chamber’s workforce marketing team, led by Workforce Solutions Alamo


Objective: Encourage efforts to expand biomedical education

  • Served as a catalyst for nursing program expansion at Alamo Community Colleges funded by Methodist Healthcare Ministries
  • Encouraged industry involvement in Alamo Area Academies’ proposed new Health Professions Academy
  • and supported other secondary education initiatives focused on health careers
  • Helping organize city’s first Health Explorers Post


Strategy #4: Generate Necessary Funding and Resources


Objective: Host investor/donor/legislator events to develop industry awareness/support

  • Served as community sponsor and panelist at the Texas Life Science Conference in Houston
  • Co-sponsored early-stage venture capital luncheon in San Antonio
  • Participated in dinner meeting with Defense Advanced Research Project Agency officials seeking translational science opportunities with Texas companies and institutions
  • Assisted Mayor’s office in evaluating feasibility of starting a “double bottom-line” technology investment fund in San Antonio


Objective: Build community membership and cultivate ongoing public support for BioMed SA

  • Secured renewed 2009 grant funding commitments totaling $310,000 from City of San Antonio, Bexar County, CPS Energy and Methodist Healthcare Ministries
  • Expanded focus on building membership within the community at large in addition to the biomedical industry
